Back to School "pep talk" Activity

In preparation for the beginning of the new school year for many of our young women, we had a special guest speaker to share some advice about what we can do to make the best of our year at school and in life. Sister Carter provided some wonderful advice that can be useful in our lives. She thought about her young girls and then came up with some good advice that she would like to share with them and with our young women.

1- Choose good friends. Her best friends' standards and goals helped Sister Carter in many ways and different times in her life.
2- Be a good friend. Be kind, think about ways to help others, stop gossip, etc..
3- Be careful how you spend your free time. In the scriptures in Doctrine and Covenants it states that we should "be anxiously engaged in a good cause." Learn a new skill, sewing, cooking, or practice musical instruments. These are great ways to use your time wisely, especially while you are still at home and can ask your mom how to make your favorite recipes.
4- Be careful where you spend your free time.
5- Be ACTIVE in church. Prepare to take the sacrament and remember the importance of renewing your covenants. Keep the Sabbath day holy and help your family.
6- Be careful about your MEDIA choices. There is so much "noise" and distractions that try to keep you from fulfilling your divine destiny. Think about the movies that you watch, music that you listen to, and the amount of time you use on the internet. Elder Bednar has an excellent message that he shares in "Things as they Really Are." Watch this short video and think about your media usage.
7- Don't change your STANDARDS for anyone. Remember who you are, lift others up to where you are as you STAND IN HOLY PLACES.



After our pep talk we did a few activities to get us ready for school. Eating our cereal with our "eyes closed" in which MEGAN was victorious, knowing geography of the UNITED STATES- GREAT JOB Corinne, and a quick obstacle course relay running through the house with a heavy backpack, carrying a jacket, wearing a hat, and with a pencil behind your ear- Team 1 had a time of 1:32.07 and Team 2 had 1:40.32!!
Way to go everyone! We know you are going to have a great year of school this year!!
